I fitted my imported ThermoGuard EGT to the Defender this weekend. Was a little nervous drilling into the exhaust manifold but all went OK. For those of you who are interested the costs were as follows.
ThermoGuard EGT R1300
Customs Duty R380
29/64” Drill Bit R74
BSP Tap R85
Tap Handle R108
Total R1946.00
It took about 4 hours to complete the job.
In the short time I’ve had to test it around Joburg I have found the following.
Normal Driving in Traffic = 200 - 250 Deg C
Acceleration = 450 Deg C
Full Throttle Up hill = 690 Deg C.
In simple terms the Thermoguard as with any EGT is a simple temperature probe
located in the exhaust manifold. It gives instant indication of overheating due to
overfueling.
The Thermocouple is Type K 6mm x 120 mm MIMS 2M braided lead.
The indicator is a LAE LTS12TCD. LAE is Italian. It comes in a complete kit.
Even has a new manifold to turbo gasket, scotch-lock connectors and cable ties.
Instruction sheet is excellent.
I bought it directly from Ian Peterson at ThermoGuard in Alice Springs Oz.
Update:
My experience this weekend to Durban and back from JHB shows that its not
the obvious places where you would expect problems ie Town Hill and Van
Reenens pass with heavy load and full throttle conditions. I experienced
704deg C (the highest temp on the trip) coming out of Mooi River. Long
slight uphill taken at 120 Kph. This device enabled me to immediately pull
back a little on the gas and hence drop the temp to 650 degC.
There was no noticeable reduction in power. I'm told that EGT
should not exceed 700 degC.
